SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The U.S. Coast Guard raced in to save a 13-month-old girl who suffered a medical emergency on board the Disney Fantasy cruise ship this week.

The Coast Guard said the child experienced a problem around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday while the ship was 34 miles off the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. She required immediate medical attention on shore.

As the cruise ship pulled into port at San Juan Harbor, a Coast Guard rescue boat arrived to take the little girl and her family off the ship. Once on shore, they were taken to a hospital in San Juan.

"We realized this was a time sensitive case, and that we needed to help this child get to a higher level of medical care as soon as possible," said Petty Officer Carlos A. Garay. "Our crew is very glad to have helped this child and her parents, we wish her a prompt recovery."

The condition of the child, including the emergency she suffered from, have not been released.

The Disney Fantasy sails on 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7-night voyages from Port Canaveral in Central Florida.
