WXYZ television station, owned by The E.W. Scripps Company, produced a series exploring the lives of Muslims in metro Detroit. Over several weeks and through a number of short videos, the station profiled Muslim Americans and helped to explain their religion. This is one of several pieces in that series.

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. In fact, it’s projected that by the end of the century, there will be more Muslims than Christians in the population.

But how much do you know about the faith?

Muslim AMERICAN: Inside a growing Michigan community

It's not easy to explain an entire religion in a short amount of time, but we worked to do that in the video you see here.

Islam is extensive and complex, as are other religions. Its practices are governed by two forms of knowledge.

“We believe that God has created two types of guidance for humanity:  a guidance from within which is human intellect -- and the guidance from without which is the role of the prophets,” said Imam Ibrahim Kazerooni of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn.

The latest video in our Muslim American: Inside a Growing Michigan Community series gives a brief overview of Islam in just under 90 seconds as an introduction to the religion that’s flourishing around the globe.

We created this series to explore the lives of Muslims in metro Detroit. Over several weeks and through a number of short videos, we profiled several Muslim Americans and help to explain their religion.

Our intent is to build bridges by exploring the fear that exists among some non-Muslims. In the video clips we shared, you'll meet metro Detroit neighbors who are nurses, lawyers and community leaders. There are parents and grandparents who believe they have been the target of hatred and violence because of their religious beliefs.
