For Nora Janssen the place that brings her joy is filled with horses, roosters and a pot belly pig.

"That aroma of a barn was heaven for me," Janssen said.

For seven years she's shared her happy place with the people who need it most.

"To help others who have issues with grief any kind of depression," she said.

It's called Karen's Equine Intervention and is named after her daughter who passed away at the age of 30.

"As any person would tell you losing a child is probably the worst thing that can happen to you," Janssen said.

Since then, the barn has had its ups and downs. Right now it's down. Recently a volunteer accidentally caused $3,000 damage to her arena.

"It's hard to find good people who are willing to work very hard for zero dollars and just the gratification of doing a good thing," she said.

But Janssen is not giving up. Her hope is that new volunteers and a little extra fundraising will get the barn back up and running.

"I will fight to keep it, I will fight to keep it going even if it's at the smallest level," she said.

Janssen will be raising funds on December 8th at Karen's Barnyard Christmas an annual event to help children. If you'd like to volunteer or donate you can contact Janssen at 561-847-6202.
