Sandi Tree damaged by rain

Posted

Heavy rain Friday damaged the Sandi Tree in West Palm Beach.

One side of the tree has been washed out but city officials say they will still run the holiday lights at night.

Event coordinators with the city say sand sculptors will be back Monday or Tuesday to fix the tree.

They're not sure if it can be 100% repaired though.

It took sculptors ten days to make the 35 foot tall tree.

The tree cracked in some areas after it rained Wednesday. Thursday sculptors spent half the day covering parts of the tree to try and protect it.

Organizers say they were hopeful the tree could stand up to the elements, but were also prepared for the worst.

"We've had rain in the past and it just gives it a little texture. I don't know how many hours it rained, but it's Mother Nature, it's outdoor events and we deal with these kinds of things. So we just implement some solutions and move on,” said West Palm Beach Community Events Manager Mary Pinak.

A few of the smaller sand sculptures in “Sandi Land” were also damaged. They will be fixed as well.

Event planners say the repairs should be completed by Wednesday.
