16 dogs recovering from puppy mill

Veterinarians at a Boca Raton animal rescue say nearly 300 dogs just rescued from an Arkansas puppy mill survived some of the worst conditions ever seen.

"We know we're going to make them better.  We know that we're giving them love they never had," says Melissa Lipman at Tri-County Animal Rescue.

Lipman is currently looking over 16 dogs, some of them doing OK, but others not so much.

"One female shih tzu has infections in both eyes," said Lipman.

About 300 dogs were rescued, and Lipman says this rescue takes in dogs from puppy mills at least five times a year, but this one is the worst of the worst.

"These are pretty bad. Some of them were so emaciated and in such poor condition they could barely walk," said Lipman.

She is confident all of them will be nursed back to health, but making sure all 16 are adoptable is tougher.

"That can be a long process," says Lipman.

"At 10-years-old, this dog was probably in a cage its whole life and now its finally getting its first taste of love," says Amanda Schussler at Tri-County Animal Rescue.

Lipman says it will take at least three weeks before these dogs will be eligible for adoption.
