Alcohol-related incidents prompt changes to Greek life at Florida Atlantic University

Changes are being made to Greek sponsored events at Florida Atlantic University because of recent alcohol-related incidents.

The university's Greek Alliance announced chapter-sponsored tailgates for this Saturday's football game against North Texas are now canceled. Members may tailgate in small groups, and those who are of age can bring their own alcohol.

In a statement, the Greek Alliance mentioned circumstances of past tailgates at FAU and alcohol-related incidents at other universities.

A ban on parties or social events with alcohol present is also now in place for the rest of the semester. The only exception is for previously scheduled events hosted by a third-party vendor.

Starting in January, all chapter-hosted events that involve alcohol are also suspended. FAU says it will revisit the changes at the end of January.

If the ban is removed, FAU says it will require every "wet" event to have a third-party vendor present. It will also consider limiting the number of events with alcohol held each month.
