Boca Raton police honored fallen officers today.
The department held a ceremony as part of National Police Week. May 15 is National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Throughout the week, departments host events to pay tribute to law enforcement officers killed while serving.
At today’s ceremony, the honor guard lowered the flags outside the police department to half staff. The mayor and police chief placed a memorial wreath outside.
Chief Dan Alexander said these events highlight the connection officers have with the community.
“We do this to reinforce what’s important about our job and the commitment to duty,” Alexander said. “Beyond that, we want the public to get an understanding of the sacrifices officers make on a day to day basis.”
One police officer has died on duty in Boca Raton. Lt William Emerson had a heart attack while training in May 1975.
