Saturday Night Live to be live across all U.S. time zones for the first time ever

It may sound redundant, but Saturday Night Live will truly be live this Saturday night, airing at the same time across all time zones, for the first time ever!

Tonight Show host and former cast member Jimmy Fallon will kick off the first of the final four episodes - all to be broadcast simultaneously coast-to-coast.

That puts the "not-ready-for-primetime-players" squarely in the middle of the primetime lineup in the west, leading to speculation the show may have to tone-down some of its edgier sketches.

But other parts of the show are going mainstream as well. SNL's news segment "weekend update" will get a limited primetime run starting in August.

Social media spoilers may have been a factor behind the live "live" decision, but ratings will likely decide whether it remains that way. The show is currently enjoying its most-watched season in 24 years.

This week's show will also feature musical guest Harry Styles.
