WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Jack the Bike Man says one final detail was overlooked when the Publix on Belvedere Road was remodeled and reopened; the street sign he counts on for bike donations.
"When they redid the parking lot they removed the old sign that had a stop sign with the street sign that said Florida Avenue on it," Jack explained. "We're located on Florida Avenue.
He says he tracked down the project's general contractor and reached out to Publix, but still no sign.
"Back on November 17 getting nowhere," Jack said. "I sent an email to Mayor Muoio and she assured me that we would have the problem corrected in 30 days." But Jack says, "It really shouldn't take 30 days to make a little sign."
According to Jack, this is the busiest time of year for him with thousands of donated bikes coming in from Miami to Vero Beach and everywhere in between. Only if they know where to bring them.
"They call us sometimes three or four times if they're not familiar with West Palm Beach. I'm getting kind of frustrated because I spend so much time giving directions to people on the telephone."
All of those telephone calls take time from his most important job of all, repairing bikes to give to kids in need at Christmas.
"I'm getting old, it's hard on me but I'm the one that has to do it because the work has to be done and it will be done."
If you have a bike or helmet you would like to donate bring them to Jack The Bike Man at 2406 Florida Avenue in West Palm Beach. Jack the Bike Man says he still needs 1,200 bike helmets for this holiday season.
