This year, the Florida Panthers Foundation awarded a grant to the Palm Beach Zoo to highlight the story of the Florida panther and showcase the conservation work being done by the Zoo. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, Florida panther populations have increased significantly, rebounding from an estimated low of 20–30 animals to over 200 since being added to the first Endangered Species list in 1967.
Wildlife officials brought Sassy to the Palm Beach Zoo after her mother was hit by a car. Unable to survive in the wild without her mother, Sassy now receives the best possible care, including specialized veterinarians to ensure all her needs are met.
Panthers once roamed freely across most of North America, but the Florida panther’s home range has since been restricted over time to the southwest corner of the state. There’s been great progress over the past several decades as Floridians have worked with wildlife experts and state government to protect more land for these elusive big cats and other native animals. Your visit to the Palm Beach Zoo and the Panther Experience supports this important conservation work.
