JUPITER, Fla. — More than two months ago, avid cyclist Wilber De Leon from North Palm Beach had a traumatic biking accident while riding with a couple of friends in Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
De Leon suffered severe injuries to his face, skull, and neck and was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center. He has not been able to work since the accident and will eventually undergo facial reconstructive surgery.
On Thursday night, De Leon's work family at Calaveras Cantina, located at Harbourside Place in Jupiter, is hosting a fundraiser to help with his medical bills.
"He was wearing all his safety gear, helmet. Unfortunately the way he fell, doctors say if he wasn't wearing a helmet, he probably wouldn't have survived," said Dana Hardy, Sales and Marketing Manager at Calaveras Cantina. "Bills, unfortunately, don't stop when something happens to you."
"We're a big family here. We want to take care of our own," said Chef Sam Walker.
The restaurant will donate 20 percent of sales to De Leon's recovery and is selling $2 raffle tickets for prizes. The grand prize is a stay at the Wyndham Grand.
If you want to help and can't make it to Thursday night's event, you can donate to the GoFundMe page the restaurant has set up.
