As shoppers' preferences for buying products on websites like Amazon instead of at brick-and-mortar stores changes, more than 8,600 retailers will close their doors in 2017.
The Wall Street Journal says one-quarter of America's shopping malls are expected to shutter in the next five years.
These closures are forcing shopping and entertainment districts like CityPlace to get inventive when 110,000-square-foot anchor stores like Macy's pull out.
Opening later this month in the former Macy's location at CityPlace is an experimental space called Culture Lab. It will be a cultural arts center and creative space.
Inside, the Culture Lab will host events, exhibits, and other surprises.
