Return policies to know this holiday season

Returning holiday gifts is inevitable for some of us. But before you head to the store to return your item, make sure you’re familiar with return policies, because many are getting stricter this holiday season.

Some stores like Best Buy and Victoria's Secret have tightened their policy. You'll need an ID to get a refund. Then, your name is run through a system that can detect possible return abuse.

Best Buy also has a short return period. Items need to be returned within 15 days. You could also end paying a 15 percent restocking fee, depending on the item.

Some other tough return policies to be aware of are at Sears and Kmart, where you can only return items 30 days after the purchase date. Customers can only get a refund with the original receipt. If you have the gift receipt, you will get in-store credit.

The popular online website New Egg will only guarantee a refund on returns that are unopened and within 30 days. You’ll only get 75 to 85 percent of what you paid once you open that box.

Walmart stepped up its return game this year for pretty much anything you buy on their website. Even if it's not from Walmart, you can bring it in a store and they'll ship it for you. However, the company is still strict on some electronics, only allowing 15 days to return after purchasing.

Nordstrom, J.C. Penny, Kohls and Costco have some of the easiest processes and longest time periods to make a return.
