Hillary Clinton talks about Zika threat at medical center in Wynwood

Posted

The number of locally transmitted cases of the Zika Virus continues to grow.

Tuesday, Governor Rick Scott confirmed 4 more non-travel related cases of Zika under investigation.

There are now 21 cases of non-travel related Zika in Florida.

This latest news comes as the democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton toured a medical center in Miami’s Wynwood district to talk about the Zika threat.

Wynwood has been the epicenter of local Zika transmission not only in both Miami and the United States.

“This is a serious challenge,” she said at the Borinquen Medical Center Tuesday afternoon.

Clinton said the federal government cannot afford to wait to take action here.

Following the lead of Florida Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio, Clinton challenged Congress to come back from vacation.

“I’m asking Republic leaders in the House and Senate to call congress back into session and to pass the bipartisan funding bill that the senate passed,” said Clinton.

Clinton’s visit comes just one day after health officials confirmed the first locally transmitted case of Zika in Palm Beach County, and less than an hour after Governor Scott reported four more people in Wynwood who likely got the virus from a local mosquito bite.

“It’s just crazy,” said Miami resident Audrey Cruz who was at the same medical center Tuesday to be tested for Zika. “I caught a fever. My bones started to hurt.”

Cruz says she works in the Wynwood district and she does not take the Zika Virus lightly, and told NewsChannel 5 she’s glad that Hillary Clinton is taking it seriously too.

“I think it’s real good that she’s trying to help us with the whole Zika Virus,” said Cruz.
