Boys and Girls club gym reopens after bat infestation

INDIANTOWN, Fla. — INDIANTOWN, Fla. -- It started in Late August at the Boys and Girls Club in Indiantown.

First, there were noises.

Then one morning, a cleaning crew spotted them. Bats, by the hundreds, had made themselves at home, crawling through small openings in the gym ceiling, forcing the club to close it for nearly three weeks.

“The bats were actually living in between that corrugated roof there in the corner. You can see some staining rubbing up against there," said Kenny Baez as he pointed at the gym ceiling.

Baez is with Critter Guys out of Orlando. They had issues up above, and down below where bat guano littered the gym floor. Guano is bat poop.

Now bats are protected and can’t be handled, so the Critter Guys build a one-way contraption to get rid of them, and seal up the holes.
Wednesday, they were invited back to teach the kids about bats.

Keith Fletcher, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Martin County came to the club Wednesday in a Batman outfit. He decided to turn a negative, into a positive educational experience.

“Our kids were fascinated. They asked how the bats got in? What role do they play in the environment? How were we going to get them out? said Fletcher.
