MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — A group of Treasure Coast parents are back in action. Last year 'Martin County Parents United' fought for a 1/2 millage tax increase to go towards teacher's pay.
In August, voters approved that increase, but the founder of the group Danielle McDonough says their work might not be over.
"So originally the group was started because we wanted to see our teachers get more money," she said.
That's when voters approved the tax increase that would bring in an estimated $11.2 million a year. More than a third of that is supposed to go towards teacher's pay.
But more than six months later McDonough says it's been difficult for her group to see how much money is being collected.
"We want it defined, we want it independent," she said.
So they're asking for an independent oversight committee to track the funds.
"Just give us some transparency let us as an independent committee look over it and be proud," McDonough said.
WPTV reached out to the school board and the district and a spokesperson said no one was available to comment, but did say there was discussion of an oversight committee at a Feb. 22 policy workshop.
WPTV checked the published agenda online and it only mentioned an independent sales tax surtax oversight committee.
