Many of them are just four letters long, but researchers say people who use curse words often have bigger vocabularies.
Psychologists at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts studied men and women ages 18 to 22. They were asked to think of as many swear words as they could come up with in one minute, then list as many animal names as they could in one minute. They found both men and women who cursed more named more animals.
The study does consider both typical taboo curse words and the use of derogatory gender and racial terminology. Read more on the study HERE.
This particular study suggests people with larger vocabularies tend to have higher overall intelligence and are emotionally stronger.
Other recent studies have suggested cursing can diminish pain, reduce stress, make people feel stronger, create better bonds with friends and even be an indicator that a person is more honest or faithful.
Experts also say cursing can hurt your success in the workplace and be viewed as unprofessional.
