Outside George Washington's home in Mount Vernon, Virginia, crowds gathered to watch a military reenactment. It was all part of a tribute to celebrate the nation's first president on this Presidents Day.

Many children went to the event to learn.

“This is my son Brody. He's a third-grader [and] has school project where he's going to be George Washington,” explains one father in attendance.

The celebration on Presidents Day provided an interactive history lesson to children and adults alike.

“I learned a few things, too,” says the father. “This is an opportunity for them. No electronics, no electricity, so they're learning what life was like.”

President Washington died in 1799, and he requested to be buried at his home. Presidents Day started as a way to honor the nation’s first president, but it has evolved.

Now, it’s widely viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, past and present.
