Hurricane Blanca may reach Category 5 status

Posted

Hurricane Blanca is churning 400 miles off the coast of the Mexican Riviera and is expected to reach Category 5 status this week.

Blanca's rapid intensification has forecasters calling it a storm to watch. It is the sixth to reach Category 5 status in 2015.

That status means winds will gust at speeds of 157 miles per hour or greater. Blanca will likely reach that by Thursday evening.

The storm will weaken as it tracks toward Baja California. According to the Weather Channel, remnant rains from the hurricane may fall in the Desert Southwest and Rockies sometime next week.
