SHELBY, N.C. -- An eye doctor in North Carolina shared graphic photos on social media to warn against sleeping with contact lenses on.

Vita Eye Clinic in Shelby, N.C., explained in a Facebook post that sleeping in contact lenses can cause psudomonas ulcer, a cause of "ocular morbidity and its opportunistic characteristics quickly lead to permanent blindness."

The eye doctor said the picture marks the fourth time they treated psudomonas ulcer. The eye doctor went on to say they discourage people from sleeping in any brands of soft contact lenses.

"It takes seconds to remove your contacts but a potential lifetime of irreversible damage if you choose to leave them in," the Facebook post said.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said those who wear contact lens should discontinue use if they experience symptoms like red eyes, pain in and around eyes, light sensitivity, sudden blurry vision, unusually watery eyes or discharge. If the symptoms continue after a couple of hours or gets worse, you are encouraged to call an eye doctor, the CDC said on its website.
