Arkansas State Police investigators say three people are dead and several are hurt after a series of chain-reaction crashes on Interstate 49, about nine miles south of Texarkana.

According to a report by KSLA television station, 10 people were taken to hospitals. Police believe dense fog caused a car to rear-end a semi-tractor trailer, and that set off a series of crashes.

One set of crashes happened on the southbound side of the highway, and another happened on the northbound side.

Police believe one man who died was a truck driver who had gotten out of his vehicle to warn others to stop.
