CHICAGO (AP) -- The son of a Chicago police officer is the latest victim of the city's gun violence.

Police say 19-year-old Arshell Dennis was shot in the chest early Sunday on Chicago's South Side and pronounced dead at a hospital. A 20-year-old man also was shot and taken to a hospital in serious condition. Authorities haven't revealed details of the shootings.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says the deceased's father, Officer Arshell "Chico" Dennis, worked patrol with police Superintendent Eddie Johnson.

The younger Arshell Dennis was about to begin his junior year at New York's St. John's University. Johnson said in a statement he was a "good kid" with "a promising future as a journalist."

The victim's grandfather, also named Arshell Dennis, said he had been expected to return to school Sunday afternoon.
