State and county police will take over patrols of Ferguson, Missouri protests following the shooting of two police officers Thursday morning.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Ferguson police will continue city patrols elsewhere.

The officers were shot while in formation to block protesters in front of the Ferguson Police Department. The gunfire came from a hill that overlooks the station, CNN reports.

One officer was shot below the eye and the bullet lodged behind his ear. The other was shot in the shoulder.

Neither officer worked for the Ferguson department. Both are expected to survive. There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to the shooter.

The renewed tension between police and protesters comes after the resignation of Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson on Wednesday.

The resignation follows the departure of several public officials after a federal investigation showed rampant racism in the city, where Michael Brown was shot to death by a police officer on Aug. 9, 2014.

Ferguson City Manager John Shaw resigned Tuesday. A municipal judge, court clerk and two police officers also resigned or were fired in addition to the city manager and police chief. Mayor James Knowles III resisted calls to resign at a Wednesday press conference.

The Missouri Supreme Court announced Monday that a state judge would take over local court cases in Ferguson.
