Police say they were called to the Sears Auto Center in Salem at about 7:50 a.m. Saturday.
According to a 911 call, a caller reports that a worker was filling up the tire when it "exploded off the machine" and hit both men in the head.
Police say 22-year-old worker Justin Almon, of Sandown, died of head injuries.
Police say 23-year-old customer Adam Sproul, of Boothbay, Maine, was flown to Boston Medical Center with serious head injuries.
