A mother died Tuesday after her son, 2, accessed a concealed pistol in her purse and accidentally shot her.

The incident occurred while shopping at a Hayden, Idaho Walmart while the child was seated in the shopping cart. Authorities identified the woman as Veronica Rutledge, 29, from Blackfoot, Idaho.

"Instances like this, you know I'm a big proponent of a concealed weapon for your own safety. However, you have to be responsible. Unfortunately, in this case, that just wasn't," said Stu Miller of the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office to KHQ-TV.

The woman had a concealed weapon’s permit, The New York Times reports. The store remains closed after the shooting.
