The storm strengthened from Category 3 to Category 4 as it passed over Nassau.
Wind gusts reached 140 mph, waves crashed on the beach and debris from palm trees flew across the island.
The wind ripped railings off balconies at the hotel.
Power is out in most of Nassau.
