(WWBT, NBC NEWSCHANNEL) A fun day on the beach turned deadly for a Chesterfield, Virginia woman after she was impaled by an umbrella.
Police say Lottie Belk was killed when a wind gust lifted a neighboring umbrella hitting her in the chest. The family is waiting for results from the medical examiner's office in Norfolk.
"I don't understand it," said Karen West Moten as she sadly shakes her head. "It breaks my heart to know that she's gone."
A day after Lottie Belk was killed, her friend and neighbor Karen West Moten is still trying to wrap her mind around what happened.
"I don't understand why they didn't remove the umbrellas from the beach because of the wind. I don't understand it," she says.
