OCEAN CITY, Md. — A Pennsylvania woman is hospitalized after being impaled by an umbrella on a Maryland beach.
According to Ocean City, Maryland spokeswoman Jessica Waters, witnesses told authorities a gust of wind lifted the umbrella from the sand, causing it to impale the 46-year-old victim in the chest.
Beach Patrol Captain Butch Arbin tells WMAR the woman was sitting in a chair when the point of the wooden pole portion of the umbrella pierced her below the left collar bone. Fire crews had to cut the pole, in order to remove the umbrella.
The patient was helicoptered to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, where she is expected to survive her injuries.
