A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows that a majority of Americans oppose GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump's recent proposal for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States."

In the poll, 59 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of Muslims and only 29 percent see Muslims in a negative light. Among Republicans only, 43 percent hold a favorable view of Muslims, but 48 percent hold a negative or unfavorable view.

Views toward Trump's plan among Republicans are a little more mixed. Among GOP voters, 42 percent support Trump's proposal to ban Muslims from entering the U.S., but 36 percent oppose the plan.

Perhaps surprisingly, 11 percent of Democratic voters support Trump's call to ban Muslims, but overwhelmingly, 75 percent of Democrats oppose the controversial proposal.

Only 13 percent of urban dwellers and 27 percent of suburban respondents back Trump's plan. Most of Trump's support comes from elsewhere. According to the poll, 41 percent of rural Americans support the Republican candidate's anti-Muslim proposition.
