FHP cracking down on drunk driving this NYE

The Florida Highway Patrol is out in full force and troopers say drivers need to be alert for the next 12 hours too.

You don't want to end your night with blue and red lights in your rear view.

"We look for vehicles unable to maintain their lane, swerving, running off the roadway," said Trooper Chelsea Garo.

Trooper Garo says once the sun goes down and the parties start, so does the erratic driving on Florida highways.

FHP's DUI unit is monitoring the highways and additional troopers are also out looking for any strange driving patterns. Speeding or even going to slow are signs of drinking and driving.

"You're just doing a welfare check, making sure they're okay and making sure they're not texting and driving and that's usually the time you find out they've been drinking and partying," added Trooper Garo.

And the dangerous driving isn't over just after midnight.

"It could last anywhere from tomorrow, even tomorrow morning or even mid-afternoon," said Trooper Garo.

FHP remind you not to drink and drive. Troopers suggest you take a cab, an uber ride, or call a friend, anything but get behind the wheel. If you see a driver that is changing lanes constantly, swerving, driving the wrong way, make a call to law enforcement.
