LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. — A Lake Worth Beach man lighting fireworks in the road was hit and killed by a minivan New Year's Day, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said a 2003 Honda Odyssey was traveling southbound on North C Street just after midnight Friday.

The front of the vehicle hit a pedestrian, identified as Rudy Leonel Martin Jimenes, 29, of Lake Worth Beach, who investigators said was lighting fireworks on the road.

Jimenes was dragged by the minivan to the intersection of Lake Avenue.

Investigators said witnesses pursued the vehicle, which fled the scene, and identified the driver.

Jimenes was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center with life-threatening injuries but died Friday just after 5 a.m.

The sheriff's office report says charges are pending in the crash.
