Thousands of grave sites of fallen veterans are now adorned with wreaths for the holiday season.
They were placed Saturday at the South Florida National Cemetery in suburban Lake Worth.
“It means a great deal to me," Harry Hill said. "It means a great deal to me, my children and my grandchildren.”
Hill who’s turned this into an annual tradition says the 'Wreaths Across America' project recognizes those who have been forgotten.
In 1992 it was one man at the Arlington cemetery that quietly laid wreathes in front of those receiving the fewest visitors.
“Freedom doesn’t get passed on in our genes. It gets passed on by people just like the people laid to rest here,” Hill said.
Debbie Cavanaugh’s parents are both buried at the national cemetery. Each year she and her students come by to pay their respects.
“They fought for our freedom and I’m so proud to be an American,” Cavanaugh said.
A ceremony also took place before the wreath laying at the cemetery's entrance. Walmart donated the wreaths used for this year's event.
