First there were cheers and then a few tears of joy as Palm Beach County Superintendent Dr. Robert Avossa announced the district’s teacher of the year.
Dr. Evangeline Aguirre received the honor during a surprise celebration Tuesday morning.
Dr. Aguirre teaches intensive reading to students who are non-native English speakers.
She works at Palm Beach Central High School and was selected from more than 13,000 teachers in the district.
Dr. Aguirre moved the U.S. from the Philippines as a part of a teacher exchange program.
She's has 25 years of teaching experience, the district said.
