Public to vote on Palm Beach County school referendum

Posted

A push to increase school funding in Palm Beach County now lies in the hands of voters. A referendum that would increase property taxes will be on the November ballot.

Tuesday morning Palm Beach County Commissioners approved the wording of the referendum.

If your house is worth $200 thousand, you would pay about $150 on top of what you already pay right now.

School advocates say the increase in tax dollars would help many areas including teacher retention in the county.

Justin Katz with the Classroom Teachers Association said: "The state legislature has repeatedly curtailed funding for public education and tough decisions have been made which have limited our ability to provide increased security, provide for mental health professionals."

If approved in November, it will go into effect the following school year.
