The Palm Beach County school district is hoping a sales tax added to November's ballot will be approved in order to make some costly improvements.

A 35-page report released by the district Wednesday shows 196 buildings across the county need "critical" repairs, including 23 schools that are considered to be in "poor" condition.

The report said the total cost for maintenance, technology upgrades, security enhancements and improvements to school buses and support vehicles is about $1.4 billion.

About $229 million is needed just to fix air conditioners.
