RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. — A Riviera Beach councilwoman's bid for re-election is facing a legal challenge.
A lawsuit claims that councilwoman Dr. Julia Botel should be disqualified from running in the March 4 election.
The suit filed by another candidate who was disqualified, David Searcy, alleges Botel used outdated paperwork in Riviera Beach to file her candidacy.
"Anytime you have an irregularity such as this, we think it is important to all citizens because fair and open elections are the hallmark of our constitution and the foundation of this country," said attorney Richard Ryles.
A statement from the Botel campaign states all paperwork in the candidacy filing was proper, and they are confident the courts will uphold her candidacy.
