Homeless shelter in need of warm clothes

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. -- These chilly nights in South Florida could not come at a worse time for a Riviera Beach homeless shelter.

The Valley of Love Ministries at 1901 Broadway in Riviera Beach is struggling to get donations, which could lead to the homeless being left without a warm place to sleep.

The non-profit provides food, shelter and job resources to the homeless.

But, the bills are stacking up, and the donations are not coming in according to President, Marie Antoinette Jean-Pierre.

She says the water has been shut off completely. Because of that, she hadn't been opening her doors to the homeless. But on Tuesday, she said that had to change.

"Tonight, since it's so cold, I have no choice but to open tonight. It's freezing outside… I went home last night and I couldn't even sleep thinking about all my brothers and sisters outside freezing."

Her water has been off for two weeks, and she says her power could also be shut off any day. "We have a $3,000 light bill right now."

Regardless, she's decided she has to let people inside. They can't shower or use the restroom. She's also struggling to collect coats, blankets and sweaters to keep them warm.

"Everybody is going through a hard time," Jean-Pierre said.

She's asking the community to come forward with donations of warm clothing, blankets, and water bottles.

You can drop off donations at the 1901 Broadway location.

Jean-Pierre says you can also call 561-502-8757 and she can arrange to have your items picked-up.

There is also a Go Fund Me account to help raise money to turn the water back on and pay for the power at Gofundme.com/valleyoflove.
