CANAL POINT, Fla. — An 80-year-old West Palm Beach man was killed and a woman suffered serious injuries after their vehicle was struck by a train Thursday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at 3:49 p.m. in the 12000 block of US Highway 441 N. in Canal Point, just north of Pahokee.
FHP said the victim was driving his pickup truck eastbound on Lakeview Drive, west of US Highway 411, when he failed to see the train traveling southbound.
The man, who has not been identified, drove onto the train tracks and the vehicle was immediately struck on its front left by the front of the train.
Officials said the pickup rotated clockwise and came to a final rest on a grass ditch west of the train tracks.
The train came to a controlled stop following the crash, FHP said.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
His passenger in the vehicle, a 55-year-old woman of Vienna, Georgia, suffered serious injuries.
Both eastbound and westbound lanes of US-441 N were closed for hours while officials worked the scene.
The case is pending investigation.
