Avocado shortage hurting local restaurants

Customers may have to skip the guacamole the next time they eat out.  Avocados are a rare commodity right now with a drought in California and worker strikes in Mexico.

Restaurants are struggling day to day to get their hands on enough avocados.

On Wednesday, there were visitors to West Beach’s Avocado Grill on Datura Street could get guacamole, but down the street at Rocco's Tacos there was none available.

Rocco’s managers admit there are no avocados in their kitchen because their buyer couldn't find any this morning.

They even called around to local grocery stores, but no one had enough.

At E.R. Bradley's on Clematis Street, managers said they're calling several different produce companies a day.

"Some places are out, some places where we could easily get a case or two or three at times are definitely down to a case a day and kind of watching who they're selling to," said E.R. Bradley's manager Brett Marzec.

Chefs at E.R. Bradley's, like most restaurants, prefer hass avocados that are grown in California and Mexico for their rich flavor.

But with the shortages, they’re make changes.

"We're looking at some Florida avocados, which we typically don't use," said Marzec.

They are doing whatever they can do to please customers.
