Commissioner wants county to review security

Posted

In light of the San Bernardino Massacre, Palm Beach County Commissioner Steven Abrams will ask at Tuesday's county commission building for an update on security at county buildings.

"While the main county facility is secure, some of the other county facilities may not be as secure so I think we need to examine that and whether our employees are trained to respond to an attack on a county facility," Abrams said.

Abrams has dealt with terrorism before.

He was recently sworn in as the mayor of Boca in 2001 when the city was faced with an anthrax attack.

"It was not in my play book. It occurred just months after I was sworn in," Abrams said.

Abrams says the county manager is preparing a report for Tuesday's meeting updating the commission about security at the county buildings.

Abrams is also pushing for increased training for employees.

That includes what to do if there is an active shooter in the workplace.

"I haven't had the training for example. I think it needs to be more widespread and done more frequently," Abrams said.

Abrams was careful not to say exactly what the county is discussing because some of the security information is confidential.
