Construction work is underway near the intersection of Banyan Boulevard and Australian Avenue in West Palm Beach.
It's part of a long term improvement project in the city.
Before the pandemic, nearly 20,000 vehicles were using Banyan Boulevard on a daily basis.
Allison Justice, the interim executive director the the CRA, said, "We are really trying to connect the neighborhood to downtown. Banyan Boulevard, being a thoroughfare into downtown is a difficult road to cross, the crosswalks aren't safe."
Now the road will be transformed in order to improve driving, walking and biking.
The two vehicle lanes in each direction will remain.
Uyen Dang, the traffic engineer for the City of West Palm Beach, said, "So the scope of the project is going to be major drainage improvements, road resurfacing, creating more landscape, more shade trees, and ultimately creating more walk-able and bike-able space for everybody."
She says lighting at the intersections will also be improved.
The first phase from Australian Avenue to Quadrille Boulevard will take about two years to complete.
The second phase will be from Quadrille Boulevard to Flagler Drive.
