Chris, Matt and their mom are running out of time. They need to finish buying supplies and start thinking about their school routine.
Also getting ready for the first day of school is James Cameron, a crossing guard with the West Palm Beach Police Department.
"The reason that I love this job is because I love the children," he says.
For 14 years, James has protected children crossing the streets to school. He's seen it all. What bothers him most is drivers not paying attention.
"Running stop signs, speeding, they don't have concern for the children.
"They tell me all of the time we have come out and say, 'you are not a policeman, you can't tell me what to do.' And I say, 'well it's the safety of the children.' "
James believes if drivers would just slow down in school zones and stop when crossing guards say stop -- our kids would be much safer.
Parent Penny Sangregorio agrees. "I'm thinking 'guys slow down' in my mind, or I'm thinking 'slow down' out loud in the car."
"Look at the children, remember you were a child once. I"m sure you had someone to protect you while crossing the street, or going to the grocery or whatever, so be concerned about them," Cameron added.
School begins Monday, August 15th in Palm Beach County. About 190,000 children will be attending Palm Beach County public schools.
