PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — A teen is dead and the man accused of fatally striking him on Haverhill Road Saturday afternoon and then fleeing is under arrest.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says 51-year-old Mario Ocampo Trejo was driving southbound on Haverhill Road near the intersection of Summit Pines Boulevard at 12:59 p.m.
Steven Cabrera, 17, was attempting to cross Haverhill Road from east to west, south of Summit Pines Boulevard.
As Cabrera improperly crossed the road outside of a crosswalk, he did so in the path of Trejo's 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe.
The collision threw Cabrera 50 feet from the area of impact.
PBSO says Trejo fled the scene southbound on Haverhill Road. A witness followed him to the Casa Del Monte development, where they were able to take a photograph of his vehicle.
Deputies were able to locate the vehicle, finding it parked in front of 5718 Lime Rd. near West Palm Beach. The vehicle was positively identified as the vehicle fled, due to the damage observed.
Mario Ocampo Trejo admitted to driving the Tahoe, striking Cabrera, and fleeing the scene.
He was arrested and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail.
