The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said Monday that K-9 KenzO has died.

KenzO served from 2006 to 2013 and was responsible for countless felony apprehensions, one of which the dog, a black German shepherd, sustained a gunshot wound while apprehending a murder suspect, PBSO said.

The PBSO K-9 officer was also shot twice in June, 2012 while tracking an armed suspect, but returned to duty after his injury to complete his career.

The sheriff's office wrote this on its Facebook page:

"As an overwhelming example of his fortitude, he returned to duty after this injury to complete his career. He was a truly special animal, serving his community with all of his heart. He will be missed."
