The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office wants to remind you not to leave empty boxes from your holiday gifts outside your home.
For 9-year-old Lachlan Barr, a remote-controlled robot is one of his favorite Christmas gifts. It shoots discs and does the moonwalk.
"I was amazed because that was the one thing I wanted for the past two years," said Lachlan.
His dad, Damien, added, "They're pretty happy to open anything these days," he said. "They're excited."
Damien chose his two kids' gifts carefully.
"They made a list and got some of the stuff on their list," he said.
After opening presents, Lachlan's parents put empty boxes on the curb.
"We usually get them out of the house as soon as possible so we can have more room," said Damien.
But deputies say leaving your boxes on the curb can attract thieves after the holidays. It advertises what's inside your home.
"Now that you made me aware of it, I'll pull that stuff off the street," said Damien.
Deputies suggest breaking down boxes and putting them in the garbage can, or taking them to the dump.
Other safety tips include avoid leaving labels on boxes that identify gifts, as well as serial numbers and anything with information about yourself.
Its a smart way to keep crooks from causing a Christmas calamity.
