A brave action from a sexual assault victim, coupled with an alert Florida Highway Patrol Trooper, led to her rescue last week.

West Palm Beach police said a local woman was abducted March 15 and sexually assaulted by her boyfriend.

Police said Jonathan Jean-Mary, 22, assaulted the victim and then drove to Miami at a high rate of speed.

According to a police report, Jean-Mary threatened to kill her and someone he believed she was involved with.

On Interstate 95, police said the woman spotted a FHP trooper and began honking the vehicle’s horn. The trooper noticed the commotion and pulled over the vehicle that Jean-Mary was driving.

Law enforcement experts say the woman's actions may have saved her life.

"An individual victim can make two choices: they can go quietly into the night, or as this woman did, make an effort to save herself," said former Boca Raton Police Chief Andrew Scott.

Scott said there's no doubt in his mind this situation ended well because of the trooper's quick thinking and ability to recognize the incident was suspicious.

The woman was taken to the hospital for her injuries.

Jean-Mary was arrested and faces charges of sexual battery, false imprisonment and domestic battery by strangulation.
