Giving up plastic for Lent

A West Palm Beach woman is asking people to give up single-use plastic products for Lent.

Diane Buhler is the founder of "Friends of Palm Beach."

The group is frequently cleaning up area beaches and waterways.

Diane says the product she finds the most during cleanups is plastic, especially plastic bottle caps.

Along with giving up chocolate or wine for Lent, Diane is asking people to stop using single-use plastic products.

She's been working hard to get local businesses to stop the habit. Over the last year, she's encouraged restaurants like Howley's to stop automatically passing out straws.

She hopes others will be encouraged to give up plastic for Lent, and hopefully continue long after Easter is over.

"I do believe it's an easy switch, although it'll take some people to break their habit. Like a straw. We all know how to drink from a cup, but everybody seems to want a straw. It's a simple thing. You can get a metal straw, reusable straw," Diane said.
