The start of a new school year is fast approaching, and summer school programs want to make sure kids get off to a fast start.
Wednesday, the Gifford Youth Achievement Center teamed up with Waste Management to provide more than 200 backpacks filled with school supplies.
It’s a way to make sure the kids will be ready to learn come next month.
“We hear a lot about the ‘summer slide’ and what we’re doing here is avoiding that slide. So what we’re doing is avoiding that slide and getting the students grade-ready," said Angelia Perry with the Gifford Youth Achievement Center.
“Got a notebook, pens pencils a pencil case, a highlighter, and the backpack," said fifth-grade student Kamari Davis.
The backpack giveaway also helps parents, since that’s one less thing they have to buy on their back-to-school checklist.
