A second Indian River County sheriff's deputy is recovering after a recent altercation with a suspect.
The sheriff's office said Deputy Luis Avila broke his hand after a domestic violence suspect became aggressive this weekend.
Deputies were called to the 800 block of 10th Court for a domestic violence incident. It was there they encountered Mark Harris, 26, of Vero Beach.
Harris had outstanding warrants for aggravated battery, false imprisonment and tampering with a witness.
While at the scene, deputies tried to arrest Harris for the warrants and domestic violence.
While trying to take him into custody, the sheriff’s office said Harris became aggressive and advanced toward the deputies. It was during a struggle that Avila’s hand was broken.
Harris was taken into custody and charged with resisting with violence. He is being held at the Indian River County Jail on $87,000 bond.
Avila is on leave until he recovers from his injury.
This incident happened less than 24 hours after Deputy Christopher Lester was shot in Gifford during a traffic stop early Friday morning. Lester survived his injuries and was discharged from the hospital this weekend.
