INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. — The Indian River County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating a home invasion that claimed the lives of two people early Sunday morning.
It occurred at about 3:45 a.m. in the Vero Beach Highlands neighborhood in the 600 block of 23rd Place Southwest.
WPTV reporter Romelo Styles spoke to Charlie Baker who said his mother, Amanda Baker, and his daughter, Shelby Lynn Baker, were the victims who tragically lost their lives in this incident.
"My daughter was just 19. She hadn't even begun to truly experience life," Baker said. "She was pregnant with our granddaughter, Amina."
In a Sunday morning Facebook post, Sheriff Eric Flowers called the case a "heinous crime" and asked anyone with information on the case to come forward.
"I can tell you that the residence involved is one we are very familiar with," Flowers said. "It's one that we've been to numerous times so far this year. We're familiar with a couple of the residents inside the house, and I can tell you that we are in the midst of an active homicide investigation."
While authorities have yet to officially confirm the identities, efforts to reach other family members have been unsuccessful.
Baker reminisced about the joy his mother felt when she became a grandmother.
"When I brought her first and second granddaughter into the world, she radiated happiness," he shared. “She was so close to meeting her great-grandbaby, but now, sadly, she won't."
